RESUMO

Salinity is harmful to crops when the concentration of soluble salts overcomes the salinity threshold of the crop, causing osmotic stress and limitations in plant growth. In this scenario, adopting tolerant cultivars is the most adequate strategy to minimize agricultural losses. However, the inheritance of tolerance depends on the genotype. From this perspective, this study assessed the tolerance to severe salt stress in 11 cotton cultivars based on gas exchange parameters and the free proline content. The cultivars were grown in a greenhouse and subjected to 34 days of saline irrigation (10 dS m-1), starting 45 days after seedling emergence (B1 phase). Plant growth was monitored weekly until the end of the salt stress period. The treatments consisted of a combination of two factors: eleven cultivars associated with two electrical conductivity levels of irrigation water (ECw: 0.3 and 10.0 dS m-1). The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 11 × 2 factorial arrangement with three replications (66 plots), with the experimental unit consisting of one plant per plot. Salinity impacted plant growth, being reflected on the gas exchange and free proline data of most cultivars. However, BRS 286, FMT 705, BRS 416, and BRS Acácia, and CNPA 7MH withstood the effects of stress and osmotically adjusted to the salt stress conditions, thus minimizing the damage to growth. Those cultivars are the most indicated for improvement programs aiming at tolerance to salt stress based on the results found in this research.

The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) ([Coleoptera]: [Chrysomelidae]), is the most important defoliator of solanaceous plants worldwide. This insect displays a notorious ability in adapting to biological and synthetic insecticides, although in some cases this adaptation carries relevant fitness costs. Insecticidal gene silencing by RNA interference is a novel mode of action pesticide against L. decemlineata that is activated by ingestion of a double stranded RNA (dsRNA) targeting a vital L. decemlineata gene. We previously reported laboratory selection of a > 11,000-fold resistant strain of L. decemlineata to a dsRNA delivered topically to potato leaves. In this work, we tested the existence of fitness costs in this dsRNA-resistant colony by comparing biological parameters to the parental strain and an additional susceptible reference strain. Biological parameters included length of egg incubation period, number of eggs per clutch, egg viability, larval viability, length of larval and pupal periods, adult emergence, number of eggs laid per day, sex ratio, and adult longevity. Comparisons between the 3 beetle strains detected no fitness costs associated with resistance to dsRNA. This information is important to guide effective insect resistance management plans for dsRNA insecticides against L. decemlineata applied topically to potato leaves.

Humanity has used propolis since ancient times, and its use as a food supplement has significantly increased. Several reports on propolis´ biological activity and toxicity have highlighted its anti-inflammatory properties, unlike many natural food supplements. This review addresses the anti-inflammatory roles of Brazilian green, brown, and red propolis produced by Apis mellifera, their extracts, isolated compounds, and their mode of action. Despite advances in anti-inflammatory therapies, the development of inflammatory processes in several diseases has been a concern for centuries. Demands for new anti-inflammatory drugs have led to studies on propolis products as diet components to treat and prevent inflammatory disorders. Brazilian green, brown, and red propolis are alternatives for obtaining extracts and compounds of valuable anti-inflammatory properties. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Currently, propolis is a food supplement, and to the best of our knowledge, several studies have shown that despite advances in anti-inflammatory therapies, the inflammatory process continues to be a significant concern. However, due to the demand for new anti-inflammatory drugs, propolis products as dietary components can be used to treat and prevent inflammatory disorders.

Hypovolemia induced by hemorrhage is a common clinical complication, which stimulates vasopressin (AVP) secretion by the neurohypophysis in order to retain body water and maintain blood pressure. To evaluate the role of brain L-glutamate and angiotensin II on AVP secretion induced by hypovolemia we induced hemorrhage (∼25% of blood volume) after intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of AP5, NBQX, or losartan, which are NMDA, AMPA, and AT1 receptor antagonists, respectively. Hemorrhage significantly increased plasma AVP levels in all groups. The icv injection of AP5 did not change AVP secretion in response to hemorrhage. Conversely, icv administration of both NBQX and losartan significantly decreased plasma AVP levels after hemorrhage. Therefore, the blockade of AMPA and AT1 receptors impaired AVP secretion in response to hemorrhage, suggesting that L-glutamate and angiotensin II acted in these receptors to increase AVP secretion in response to hemorrhage-induced hypovolemia.

E-health applications can support continuing care for persons with chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). We have developed a web-based mobile app called VIOLA to be used at home by persons with MS (pwMS) who previously participated in an innovative multidisciplinary rehab program. The purpose of VIOLA is to reinforce what participants have learned about a healthy lifestyle and to keep them motivated to adhere to rehabilitation programs. As the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has severely curtailed pwMS contact with their usual health providers, we quickly updated VIOLA to grant continuity of care to our home-bound patients.By monitoring pwMS subscriptions to individual modules, we found a definite increase after the national lockdown was declared. Subscribers rated the app very positively.Encouraged by the positive feedbacks, we are planning to extend the access to our app also to pwMS with no prior specific learning experience. This would limit the psychophysical consequences of the lockdown. Furthermore, VIOLA could be effective in maintaining a proper lifestyle, contributing to improve the quality of life of pwMS.VIOLA has the potential of increasing the adherence of pwMS to the rehabilitation confirming that digital communication tools are a valuable solution for those home-bound.].

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are among the most common adverse events in hospitals. We used artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for infection surveillance in a cohort study. The model correctly detected 67 out of 73 patients with HAIs. The final model used a multilayer perceptron neural network achieving an area under receiver operating curve (AUROC) of 90.27%; specificity of 78.86%; sensitivity of 88.57%. Respiratory infections had the best results (AUROC ≥93.47%). The AI algorithm could identify most HAIs. AI is a feasible method for HAI surveillance, has the potential to save time, promote accurate hospital-wide surveillance, and improve infection prevention performance.

INTRODUCTION: Variability in non-medical ultrasound practice across Europe has been highlighted in studies. Meanwhile, advanced practice in radiography has undergone rapid development in the United Kingdom (UK). This survey aimed to review results relating to extended role and advanced practice skills, motivation and job satisfaction from a wider survey of radiographers undertaking ultrasound examinations across the European Federation of Radiographer Societies' (EFRS) community. METHODS: Following a pilot study, a SurveyMonkey™ on-line questionnaire was disseminated to EFRS member societies to share with their members, and via social media platforms. Quantitative questions for this article related to extended and advanced practice skills, communication of results, job satisfaction, motivation and career development. Theme analysis was used to assess qualitative feedback concerning priorities for future developments within the ultrasound role. RESULTS: There were 561 responses, mainly from the UK, Ireland and Spain (81%). The majority (83.4%) of UK sonographers communicate findings to patients, compared with 27.1% in other EFRS countries. More engage with teaching (UK = 90.1%, non-UK 72.9%) compared with activities in the other advanced practice domains. The lowest involvement was the research domain, with only 33% actively involved in research. Radiographers were motivated to undertake ultrasound to develop their knowledge and skills and assume more responsibility. CONCLUSION: Wide variations in ultrasound practice were seen across respondent countries. Generally, radiographers are happy with their ultrasound roles, although priorities include legislation for the sonographer role, remuneration, respect or support from medical colleagues, high quality education and role progression opportunities. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The findings provide a better understanding of radiographer views which can assist radiographer societies and local teams to develop strategies to enhance advanced practice skills development and career prospects in ultrasound.

In this crossover trial, we evaluated a new technique for enteral nutrition using orogastric intubation. Twelve volunteers were randomly assigned to both orogastric (OGI) and conventional nasogastric intubation (NGI) with a 15-day interval. The tip of the orogastric tube was fixed intraorally into an upper molar. Participants were asked to remain intubated for 24 hours and rated efficacy and safety using a Likert scale (1: worst / 10: best). Tolerance in hours was longer during OGI (median 21 versus 12.5; p=0.022). OGI was superior in comfort (median 7 versus 3; p=0.002), aesthetic (median 10 versus 1; p=0.002), speech (median 5.5 versus 3; p=0.014) and swallowing (median 8 versus 2; p=0.004). Both procedures were tolerated with mild local complaints. Diet volume through the tube was greater during NGI (p = 0.014). In healthy participants, orogastric intubation with dental fixation showed greater efficacy and similar safety to nasogastric intubation. CLINICAL TRIALS NUMBER: NCT03670238.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound is one of many areas of specialism for radiographers to develop their skills in. As part of a wider suite of surveys, the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS) wanted to investigate the extent and scope of practice for radiographers practising ultrasound across Europe. This report details the results of the initial survey, exploring the views of the EFRS countries' National Radiographer Societies. METHODS: An electronic survey was sent to representatives of the 43 national radiographer societies who were members of the EFRS. Questions asked about radiographer practice in ultrasound within individual countries, scope of the role, particularly report writing, in addition to investigating current ultrasound education, barriers and opinions on priorities for radiographer ultrasound practice. RESULTS: Forty individual responses were received, from a total of 27 countries, covering 62.8% of the EFRS member societies invited to participate. Radiologists or specialised medical practitioners performed ultrasound in the majority of countries. Radiographers practise ultrasound in 48% of countries and 11% have some limited involvement in ultrasound. Countries without radiographer engagement in ultrasound reported legislative issues or lack of acceptance from the medical professions (52%) and/or limited specific ultrasound education (39%) as predominant factors. In most countries where radiographers practise ultrasound, clinical reporting is a descriptive report or checklist approved by a medical doctor/radiologist. CONCLUSION: The results highlight the scope of practice and barriers faced in some EFRS countries to enabling radiographers to develop their skills and competencies in ultrasound. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Priorities for radiographer societies to assist in the development of ultrasound as a pathway for radiographer progression in countries, where it is not yet available, include education programmes, acceptance by medical professionals and changes to legislation.

We study site- and bond-percolation on a class of lattices referred to as Lieb lattices. In two dimensions the Lieb lattice (LL) is also known as the decorated square lattice, or as the CuO_{2} lattice; in three dimensions it can be generalized to a layered Lieb lattice or to a perovskite lattice. Emergent electronic phenomena, such as topological states and ferrimagnetism, have been predicted to occur in these systems, which may be realized in optical lattices as well as in solid state. Since the study of the interplay between quantum fluctuations and disorder in these systems requires the availability of accurate estimates of geometrical critical parameters, such as percolation thresholds and correlation length exponents, here we use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain these data for LLs when a site (or bond) is present with probability p. We have found that the thresholds satisfy a mean-field (Bethe lattice) trend, namely that the critical concentration, p_{c}, increases as the average coordination number decreases; our estimates for the correlation length exponent are in line with the expectation that there is no change in the universality class.

Cardiac cellular models are utilized as the building blocks for tissue simulation. One of the imprecisions of conventional cellular modeling, especially when the models are used in tissue-level modeling, stems from the mere consideration of cellular properties (e.g., action potential shape) in parameter tuning of the model. In our previous work, we put forward an accurate framework in which membrane resistance (Rm) reflecting inter-cellular characteristics, i.e., electrotonic effects, was considered alongside cellular features in cellular model fitting. This paper, for the first time, examines the hypothesis that considering Rm as an additional optimization objective improves the accuracy of tissue-level modeling. To study this hypothesis, after cellular-level optimization of a well-known model, source-sink mismatch configurations in a 2-dimensional model are investigated. The results demonstrate that including Rm in the optimization protocol yields a substantial improvement in the relative error of the critical transition border which is defined as the minimum window size between source and sink that wave propagates. Model developers can utilize the proposed concept during parameter tuning to increase the accuracy of models.

The aim of this research is to verify the yeast species isolated from oral mucosa in street mixed-breed dogs and to determine the antifungal profiles. After capturing and sedating the animals, oral mucosa samples were collected from fifty dogs and the materials were inoculated on Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol. Forty-three yeast strains were isolated and identified trough the API-20C AUX method. Thirty-seven (86.1%) of the yeasts belonged to genus Candida, five (11.6%) to genus Trichosporon and only one strain (2.3%) to genus Malassezia. The sensitivity profiles to anifungals (amphotericin B, itraconanole, ketoconazole, fluconazole and variconazole) were determined through Etest® method. This study found resistance of some yeasts to amphotericin B and a good susceptibility to voriconazole and ketoconazole. Some of these antifungals are used in veterinary medical practice. This research is the first investigation on street mixed-breed dogs regarding yeast identifications and antifungals profiles.

Patient-specific cardiac models are now being used to guide therapies. The increased use of patient-specific cardiac simulations in clinical care will give rise to the development of virtual cohorts of cardiac models. These cohorts will allow cardiac simulations to capture and quantify inter-patient variability. However, the development of virtual cohorts of cardiac models will require the transformation of cardiac modelling from small numbers of bespoke models to robust and rapid workflows that can create large numbers of models. In this review, we describe the state of the art in virtual cohorts of cardiac models, the process of creating virtual cohorts of cardiac models, and how to generate the individual cohort member models, followed by a discussion of the potential and future applications of virtual cohorts of cardiac models. This article is part of the theme issue 'Uncertainty quantification in cardiac and cardiovascular modelling and simulation'.

Patient-specific computer simulations can be a powerful tool in clinical applications, helping in diagnostics and the development of new treatments. However, its practical use depends on the reliability of the models. The construction of cardiac simulations involves several steps with inherent uncertainties, including model parameters, the generation of personalized geometry and fibre orientation assignment, which are semi-manual processes subject to errors. Thus, it is important to quantify how these uncertainties impact model predictions. The present work performs uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analyses to assess the variability in important quantities of interest (QoI). Clinical quantities are analysed in terms of overall variability and to identify which parameters are the major contributors. The analyses are performed for simulations of the left ventricle function during the entire cardiac cycle. Uncertainties are incorporated in several model parameters, including regional wall thickness, fibre orientation, passive material parameters, active stress and the circulatory model. The results show that the QoI are very sensitive to active stress, wall thickness and fibre direction, where ejection fraction and ventricular torsion are the most impacted outputs. Thus, to improve the precision of models of cardiac mechanics, new methods should be considered to decrease uncertainties associated with geometrical reconstruction, estimation of active stress and of fibre orientation. Archaea have been the most overlooked and enigmatic of the three domains of life for decades. Knowledge of key ecological interactions, such as trophic links between this domain and higher level organisms, remains extremely limited. The co-occurrence of halophilic Archaea (haloarchaea) and the non-selective filter feeder, brine shrimp Artemia under the unique ecological characteristics of hypersaline aquatic environments, constitutes an excellent opportunity to further unravel the ecological role of the Archaea domain as a source of food to zooplankton metazoans. In the present study, we combine the use of haloarchaea biomass assimilation experiments using 13C isotope as tracer, with gnotobiotic Artemia culture tests using haloarchaea mono-diets, to investigate potential trophic links between the organisms. Our results demonstrated the ability of Artemia to assimilate nutrients from mono-diets of haloarchaea biomass in order to survive and grow, providing clear indications that archivory may occur in hypersaline aquatic environments. Additionally, our study highlights the use of stable isotopes labelling as a potential tool to further disentangle the specific pathways by which archaeal cellular constituents are digested by consumers.

Taste is a crucial factor that determines the palatability of the oral dosage form and patient compliance. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to evaluate the organoleptic excipients in oral antibiotics for pediatric use marketed in Brazil. METHODS: The information was obtained from the GuidetoPharmacy, a reference for the pharmaceutical trade. The analysis included dosage forms for oral administration and drugs and their combination with antibacterial action. After this survey, we identified the constitution of the flavoring, sweetening, and coloring agents of each medicine. The results are presented in a descriptive form. RESULTS: Twelve drugs or associations are distributed in 70medicines. Oral suspension was the most common pharmaceutical dosage form. Sweeteners were sucrose, sodium saccharin, and sodium cyclamate. All the coloring agents observed are synthetic and the most frequent ones were yellow twilight no. 6, yellow tartrazine no. 5, and red ponceau 4R. The presence of two or more types of flavorings per medicine was observed. CONCLUSION: Antibacterials use coloring agents, flavorings, and sweeteners to facilitate the administration of medicines for children, using up to six different substances per formulation. No natural coloring agent was observed, demonstrating an issue to be explored in the future. It is important to note that, although necessary, these excipients are responsible for a high incidence of allergic reactions in children.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Can Na+ depletion mobilize Na+ from the skin reservoir in ovariectomized rats? Does oestrogen replacement change the amount and the dynamics of skin Na+ storage? Is the reduced salt appetite after Na+ depletion in ovariectomized rats with oestrogen replacement related to changes in the skin Na+ ? What is the main finding and its importance? This work demonstrated that acute body Na+ depletion induced by frusemide mobilized the osmotically inactive skin Na+ reservoir to become osmotically active. Oestrogen treatment decreased the induced Na+ intake in ovariectomized rats but did not modulate the inactive Na+ reservoir in control conditions or its mobilization induced by Na+ depletion. ABSTRACT: Oestradiol, which is an important hormone for water and electrolyte balance, also has a role in the inhibition of induced Na+ appetite. Sodium can be stored in the skin in osmotically active or inactive forms, and this skin Na+ reservoir may be involved in the control of body Na+ levels during physiopathological challenges. In this study, we investigated whether the effect of sodium depletion by frusemide can mobilize Na+ from the skin reservoir and whether oestradiol replacement changes or mobilizes the Na+ reserves in the skin. Ovariectomized Wistar rats were treated with vehicle or oestradiol for 7 days to evaluate the effects of oestrogen on the hydroelectrolyte balance, intake responses and skin Na+ and water content in basal conditions. Furthermore, the effects of oestrogen were evaluated after 24 h frusemide-induced whole-body Na+ depletion. Oestradiol-replaced rats exhibited reduced water intake without any significant changes in salt intake, Na+ excretion or water and Na+ skin content in basal conditions. After sodium depletion, both vehicle- and oestradiol-treated rats exhibited an increase in the osmotically active skin Na+ , which was associated with a decrease of the inactive skin Na+ reservoir. Oestrogen decreased the hypertonic saline intake induced by Na+ depletion, but it was not associated with any significant changes in the skin Na+ reservoir. Thus, sodium depletion is able to change the inactive-active skin Na+ reservoir balance. However, the oestrogenic modulation of sodium appetite after Na+ depletion is probably not related to the action of this hormone in the skin Na+ reservoir balance.
